Franz Kaindl

Franz Kaindl (born January 17, 1931 in Linz ) is an Austrian historian . From 1977 to 1983 he was President of the Society for Austrian Army Studies and from 1983 to 1992 Director of the Army History Museum .

Life

Kaindl was born the son of an ÖBB official in Linz. He attended secondary school in Linz and the Don Bosco Gymnasium Unterwaltersdorf , where he passed his Matura in 1953 . He then studied philosophy at the University of Turin and history and geography at the University of Vienna . In 1961 he was under Alfons Lhotsky with the dissertation The Struggle of the City of Freistadt for its street privilege to the Dr. phil. PhD. From 1953 to 1955 he worked as an educator.

In 1964 he became a civil servant at the Army History Museum (HGM) in Vienna. There he took over the scientific management of the cultural history department. On November 15, 1983 Kaindl was appointed director of the HGM. Under his leadership, the number of visitors exceeded 100,000 for the first time. Numerous special exhibitions, such as From Wooden Airplane to Jet Engine (1985), Relics from the Toplitzsee (1985) and The Woman in War (1986) were organized and carried out under his directorship. In 1991 the Army History Museum celebrated its centenary, for which there was also a special exhibition and Kaindl also published the text 100 Years of the Army History Museum. Wrote known and unknown about his story . In 1992 Kaindl retired and has lived in Upper Austria ever since .

In 1974 Kaindl was a co-founder of the Society for Austrian Army Studies , and he was its president from 1977 to 1983. From 1981 to 1991 he was a member of the Autrichienne d'Histoire Militaire Commission. In 1984 he was a member of the executive committee of the Austrian National Association of the International Museum Council and the International Association of Museums of Arms and Military History. He also became a member of the Sveriges Heraldiska Sällskap. In 1985 he became a member of the humanities and social science commission of the Federal Ministry for National Defense . Initially member of the board, he was president of the Austrian Museum Association from 1988 to 1991. In 2011 he became editor of the communications from the Hartkirchen parish archive .

Kaindl is married and has one child.
