Géza Kövess
Géza Albin Alois Eugen Emerich Kövess von Kövessháza , from 1917 Baron Kövess von Kövessháza , from 1919 Géza Kövess (born May 26, 1896 in Preßburg , Austria-Hungary ; † October 12, 1977 in Vienna ) was an Austrian officer and historian . In 1950 he was provisional director of the Army History Museum .
Life
Géza Kövess was born in 1896 as the son of Lieutenant Colonel Hermann Kövess von Kövesshaza (1854-1924), later Field Marshal and Commander-in-Chief of the Austro-Hungarian Army , and his wife Eugenie, daughter of the law teacher and Austro-Hungarian Minister Anton Baron Hye von Glunek , in the capital of today's Slovakia as one of three children born. In 1917 the father became a Hungarian baron (see Nobility Repeal Act 1919).
He attended the humanistic grammar school in Innsbruck, the state grammar school in Bozen and the catholic Jesuit grammar school in Kalksburg as well as schools in Vienna, Hermannstadt (Transylvania) and Mährisch-Weißkirchen (Moravia). After graduating from the Staatsgymnasium Vienna VIII , he completed the Frequentant Course at the Imperial and Royal Technical Military Academy in Mödling and was retired as a lieutenant in the reserve. In World War I he was reactivated and served in the heavy field artillery regiment 16; he served in Serbia, Italy and Romania, most recently in the rank of first lieutenant .
In 1919 he joined the Hungarian national army , the Lehár division . In 1920 he was given leave of absence. From 1920 to 1924 he was a contract employee at the Lower Austrian Escompte Society in Vienna. Then he was a civil servant at Odol Compagnie AG in Vienna and in 1926/27 at the United Doepos Getreide AG and Futterverk. Society.
From 1927 he studied history and art history at the University of Vienna . In 1933 he was Karl Ritter von Schoen neck to Dr. phil. PhD. From 1933 to 1935 he completed the training course at the Institute for Austrian Historical Research in Vienna (state examination 1935). In 1936 he became a first lieutenant in the Austrian army .
In 1939 he became a member of the Artillery Replacement Regiment 45 and in 1940 of the Artillery Replacement Regiment 262 of the Wehrmacht . After he had already been a research assistant at the Army Museum in Vienna in 1938 , he became (major) curator and councilor in 1940.
Kövess married Gertrud von Spiess, daughter of the royal Romanian court hunter and author on hunting topics, August Roland Spiess von Braccioforte zu Portner and Höflein on June 12, 1943 Vienna.
After the Second World War he became a research assistant (1948) and curator 2nd class (1949). As early as 1949 he represented the director Alfred Mell . In 1950 he was entrusted with the provisional management of the museum. In 1951 he became deputy director and in 1954 curator 1st class. In 1960 he became an official of Administrative Service A, Scientific Service. In 1961 he retired.
Kövess was a board member of the Heraldic-Genealogical Society "Adler" and Greffier of the Austrian Order of the Golden Fleece .
