Franz Julius Keibel (born July 6, 1861 in Adlig Dombrowken, Graudenz district , † April 27, 1929 in Berlin ) was a German zoologist , anatomist and developmental biologist .

Life

After attending school in Danzig , Graudenz and Berlin, Keibel briefly studied law and then medicine in Berlin and Strasbourg . After completing his doctorate at the University of Freiburg , he became a prosector with Robert Wiedersheim at the Anatomical Institute in 1889 . In the same year he received the license to teach anatomy and developmental biology at the Freiburg University. In 1892 he became associate professor in Freiburg and in 1914 full professor at the University of Strasbourg . In 1918 he left Strasbourg and in 1919 became professor of zoology at the University of Königsberg . In 1920 he was appointed to the chair of zoology at the Berlin University as the successor to Oscar Hertwig , where he worked until his death.

Since the knowledge of ontogenetic development was incomplete around 1900 , Keibel devoted his scientific work to the descriptive and comparative development history of vertebrates , critically questioning the validity of Ernst Haeckel's basic biogenetic rule . In order to promote understanding of the comparative studies on ontogeny and embryology , he published 14 volumes of the tables of standards on the history of the development of vertebrates between 1897 and 1925 .

Keibel's research has received strong national and international attention and recognition. In 1923 he was elected a full member of the Prussian Academy of Sciences . In 1926 he became a member of the Leopoldina . He received honorary degrees from Harvard University , the University of St Andrews and the University of Birmingham .
