Franz Xaver Layr
Franz Xaver Layr (also Lair or Layer ; born August 18, 1812 in Hötting , Tyrol; † June 9, 1875 in Baden , Lower Austria) was an Austrian engraver and painter .
Life
The farmer's son from Hötting (now part of Innsbruck ) showed an artistic talent early on. He learned carving from a nativity scene carver in St. Nikolaus , and later he received drawing lessons from a private teacher. He was sponsored by Wilten Abbey and, thanks to a grant from the Tyrolean state estates, studied for eight years at the copper engraving school of the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna . In 1841 he went on a study trip to Florence , from 1853 to 1855 he again worked in Italy, where he mainly dealt with landscape paintings from the Campagna Romana . From 1855 he lived in Vienna and Baden and in 1861 became a member of the Vienna Künstlerhaus . Initially working as a copper engraver, from 1850 onwards he mainly devoted himself to painting. He created portraits, paintings, watercolors and frescoes in the style of the Nazarenes , often with religious motifs.
The Innsbruck district Höttinger Au was Layrstrasse named after him.
