Franz Mützeltin , also Mutzeltin (* 1518/1519 in Lüneburg , † May 25, 1594 in Wolfenbüttel ) was a German statesman at the time of the Reformation .

Life

Mützeltin came from a Lüneburg patrician family. His father Thomas was city secretary, his mother Hilleke (née von Möhlen) the last heir to the von der Möhlen family. He studied law in Wittenberg around 1533. He completed his studies as a licentiate in law .

In 1548 he entered the service of Duke Heinrich the Younger of Braunschweig and Lüneburg and was Chancellor in Wolfenbüttel from 1553 to 1545. Around 1558 he lost the Duke's trust because he also wrote for other princes, including Heinrich's son Duke Julius , with whom there was a very tense relationship at the time.

In 1565 Mützeltin became Chancellor of the Prince-Bishop of Hildesheim and married Margarete (nee von Gremsleben), the widow of his predecessor, Chancellor Johann von Stopler (* approx. 1495/1500; † November 27, 1553). When Duke Julius came to power in Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel in 1568 , he appointed Mützeltin as a councilor without giving up his position in Hildesheim. So he was at the same time chancellor of a Catholic bishop and as a councilor of an evangelical prince concerned with the introduction of the Reformation.

In 1573 he gave up the position in Hildesheim and, as the successor of the retired Chancellor Joachim Mynsinger von Frundeck, was extensively involved in the numerous state and church reforms of Duke Julius. For health reasons he gradually withdrew from the business and from 1588 gradually left it to Johann von Jagemann .
