Franz Neumann (political scientist, 1935)

Franz Xaver Neumann (born January 12, 1935 in Großborowitz ( Sudetenland ); † December 6, 2019 in Hausen (Pohlheim) ) was a German political scientist , university professor and local politician.

Life

After being expelled from the Sudetenland in 1946, Neumann came to Biskirchen and Leun near Wetzlar. He graduated from the Philippinum in Weilburg in 1957. He then studied chemistry and mathematics and later political science and sociology at the University of Marburg , with Wolfgang Abendroth , among others . In 1963 he passed his exams, in 1966 he did his doctorate at the University of Marburg with a thesis on the Federation of Expellees and Disenfranchised (BHE), a German party that was active from 1950 to 1961. In 1968 Franz Neumann joined the SPD .

He was then a research assistant at the Universities of Marburg and Gießen and from 1972 professor for political science in Gießen. From 1981 to 1989 he was president of the then comprehensive university in Kassel (now the University of Kassel). After 1989 he remained an honorary professor at the University of Kassel for another 14 years, and from 1981 to 2004 he also held a visiting professorship at the University of Gießen. He has worked several times as a local politician, for example from 1977 to 1981 he was a member of the local advisory council in his home town of Hausen, and from 1998 he was a member of the "Gießen District Council", which in 2001 elected him as its chairman. Until his departure in March 2011 he was chairman of the district council of Giessen.
