Franz Niebuhr (born August 27, 1906 in Schwerin ; † May 17, 1982 ibid) was a German landscape painter .

Life

After returning to his hometown in 1941 after being injured in the war, Franz Niebuhr worked as a worker and then as a messenger for the city council of Schwerin. He began to paint as a self-taught and initially as a hobby, after his daily work. At first he created watercolors and drawings, under the guidance of the Schwerin painter Carl Hinrichs he developed into a painter of mostly small-format landscapes in oil and tempera. His preferred subjects were Schwerin city views and motifs from the Baltic coast near Wismar and the island of Poel . Niebuhr was represented with his works in 1962 and 1967 at the German art exhibitions in the Dresden Albertinum and had solo exhibitions in the State Museum in Schwerin . In 1971 he was awarded the prize for artistic folk creation, first class, by the Minister for Culture of the GDR, Klaus Gysi, as a “single artist in the visual arts ”. The Beeskow art archive preserves five of his works.

“The subject of his colorfully precious works are again and again the typical fishermen's and farmers' cottages in Mecklenburg, the atmospheric and colorful peculiarities of the north German village landscape, the sea and its coast. Niebuhr prefers broken tones on its palette. "
