Franz Rydz

Franz Rydz (born May 27, 1927 in Salsitz ; † November 20, 1989 in Kienbaum ) was a senior sports official in the German Democratic Republic (GDR). Among other things, he worked from 1966 to 1989 as Vice President of the German Gymnastics and Sports Federation and from 1970 to 1989 as a member of the Presidium of the NOC of the GDR .

Life

Franz Rydz was born in Salsitz in 1927 and, after the founding of the GDR, initially acted as chairman of the state sports committee of Saxony-Anhalt from 1950 to 1952 . From 1953 to 1959, after attending the Karl Marx party college of the Socialist Unity Party of Germany, he was sector leader for physical culture and sport in the central committee of the SED , at that time the highest position within the party for sport. He was also a member of the Central Council of the Free German Youth from 1959 to 1976 .

From 1959 to 1966 he acted as secretary and then as vice-president with responsibility for the finances of the German Gymnastics and Sport Federation , the mass organization responsible for sport in the GDR. In addition, from 1961 he was Vice President of the German Football Association of the GDR and from 1970 Treasurer in the Presidium of the National Olympic Committee of the GDR .

Franz Rydz received the Patriotic Order of Merit in bronze in 1955 , in 1969 in silver and 1977 in gold, and in 1973 the Order of Labor Banner . During the political change in the GDR, he committed suicide in November 1989.
