Franz Seraph Destouches

Franz Seraph Destouches (born January 21, 1772 in Munich ; † December 10, 1844 there ) was a German musician and composer.

Life

Destouches was a son of the Bavarian court chamber councilor Joseph des Touches and his wife Sabina. He received his musical training from Theodor Grünberger and Joseph Haydn . He played the cello in the orchestra of Prince Esterházy and went on concert tours as a piano player to Austria and Switzerland. In 1791 he wrote the opera Die Thomasnacht, to which his older brother Joseph Anton contributed the libretto .

After two years as music director of the city of Erlangen , Destouches entered the service of Duke Karl August von Sachsen-Weimar as concertmaster in 1799 and later as court conductor . In Weimar he wrote plays for Friedrich Schiller's dramas Wallenstein's Camp , Turandot , The Bride of Messina , The Maiden of Orléans and Wilhelm Tell , August von Kotzebue's The Hussites in front of Naumburg in 1432 and Zacharias Werner's Wanda, Queen of the Sarmatians . He also composed the operettas The Misunderstanding and The Aloe, the oratorio The Adoration at the Grave of Jesus, the text of which was written by Johann Gottfried Herder , and numerous instrumental pieces.

Destouches taught music at the University of Landshut from 1811 to 1814 , then worked as Kapellmeister to the Prince of Oettingen-Wallerstein and from 1820 as Hessian court conductor in Homburg in front of the height . In 1842 he returned to his native Munich, where the “very old but still cheerful, cheerful old man” composed the comic opera Der Teufel und der Schneider to a libretto by his nephew Ulrich .

Destouches, whose marriage to Wilhelmine van Couven had remained childless, died in 1844.
