Franz Supper

Franz Supper (born 1957 in Oberrabnitz , Burgenland ) is an Austrian opera singer ( tenor ).

Life

Franz Supper learned the profession of plumber after the early death of his father . Encouraged by the Oberpullendorf doctor Michael Lang and the organist Gottfried Kogler , he began studying singing at the Joseph Haydn Conservatory in Eisenstadt with Heinrich Schneider at the age of 23 . He continued his training with Luise Scheit at the Vienna University of Music and Performing Arts , as well as with Walter Berry and Michael Pabst . He earned his living in the choir of the Volksoper and the Staatsoper , and as a cemetery singer .

Salzburg State Theater

After his debut at the Vienna Chamber Opera , he was engaged at the Salzburg State Theater in 1987 , where he developed over the decades from buffo tenor to drama. He celebrated great successes as Max in Freischütz , as drum major in Wozzeck , as Max in Jonny , as Florestan in Fidelio , as Jim Mahoney in the rise and fall of the city of Mahagonny and in the title roles of the operas Hoffmanns Erzählungen and Oberon . In May 2019, Franz Supper was awarded the professional title of chamber singer . Salzburg newspapers proudly reported on the "first chamber singer of the Salzburg State Theater". This celebrated its star with the gala "Franz and Friends" in the same year.

Guest performances

Guest performances led and lead the singer a. a. as Adam in The Bird Dealer at the State Theater on Gärtnerplatz in Munich, as Josef in Wiener Blut at the Vienna Volksoper or as Alfred in Die Fledermaus in Bozen .

It is a longstanding tradition of the Salzburg Festival to hire outstanding ensemble members of the Salzburg State Theater for smaller roles. In this tradition Supper debuted in the summer of 1987 at the Festival in Gerhard Wimbergers Prince of Salzburg Wolf Dietrich , in 1991 sang in Helmut Eder Mozart in New York and embodied in 2001 in Hans Neuenfels ' provocative reinterpretation of the bat to Dr. Blind. In 2002 he sang in Wagner's Parsifal at the Salzburg Easter Festival , conducted by Claudio Abbado and staged by Peter Stein . In 2013 he was Ulrich Eißlinger in the Meistersinger von Nürnberg at the Summer Festival, in 2014 and 2015 the steward of the Marschallin im Rosenkavalier , in 2015 and 2016 he took over Don Curzio in Le nozze di Figaro .

One of his finest roles at the Salzburg Festival was 2016 Isacco di York in the rediscovered opera Il templario of Otto Nicolai .

With festival ensembles, Franz Supper has also made guest appearances at La Scala in Milan and at the famous festivals in Edinburgh and Lucerne .

Supper is married and has two sons.
