history
The district of Oberrabnitz was first mentioned in a document as "villa Rebca" in 1279, is located in the upper Rabnitztal and formed with Unterrabnitz, later also with Schwendgraben, always a property unit or a landscape unit, which is still today in the dialectal name "in the Ramaz" for the upper river valley.
At the end of the 14th and beginning of the 15th century, a noble family named after Rabnitz "de Rebrefeu" or "de Rabchafey". At the end of the Middle Ages and in the 16th century, several property groups can be distinguished “in the Ramaz”: the property of the Pottendorfer von Kirchschlag, the property of the Ellerbacher von Eberau, the shares of the Landsee and the Tabor von Unterloisdorf. In 1593 Count Franz Dersffy von Landsee held two quarter sessions “pro curia” in his hands in Oberrabnitz. Apparently he intended to build a farm.
In 1600 the plague was rampant : five houses were deserted, six houses burned down in the same year, and in the following year a major fire destroyed nine more houses. In 1640 the subjects of Oberrabnitz are named in the "Urbarium of the Lanser and Lackenbacher Dominions".
Around 1780 the parish of Oberrabnitz-Karl was built and a school was founded. 1781 is reported by a Jakob Janits who is "Ludimagister" in "Superior Ramocz". In 1832, cholera raged and 30 people died within 25 days. In 1894, a large fire burned most of the town. In 1910 Oberrabnitz reached its highest population level with 434 inhabitants. In 1971 Oberrabnitz was incorporated into the Draßmarkt community together with Karl. In 2012 around 260 people lived in Oberrabnitz.
