Karl ( Hungarian : Répcekároly (old Karló) , Croatian : Kalin ) is a place in the municipality of Draßmarkt , Oberpullendorf district in Burgenland, Austria .
history
The district of Karl, first mentioned in a document in 1279, is located in the upper Rabnitztal and is one of the oldest settlements in today's Oberpullendorf district. Until around 1400 the place belonged to Landsee Castle . Afterwards the Hungarian King Sigismund Karl transferred the monastery to Marienberg . In 1562 Nadasdy's widow acquired the entire estate of Klostermarienberg. In 1676, Count Paul Esterhazy bought Klostermarienberg, among other things, and included Karl in his Landseer rule.
In 1832, cholera raged in Karl, from which five people died within a week.
In 1870 Karl received his own school. Up to this point the children went to school either in Draßmarkt or in Oberrabnitz. In 1969, Karl and the neighboring village of Oberrabnitz received a joint school in the local area of Oberrabnitz.
In 1920/1921 Karl, like all of today's Burgenland, came to Austria.
In 1971 the place was incorporated into Draßmarkt together with Oberrabnitz .

origin of the name
There are several versions of the origin of the name.
Kar or Kär (Middle High German) means valley basin . Karl or Kärl is the diminutive. This is probably how the first German settlers named their place of residence. In Hungarian documents one finds the names Keryl or Kiryl.
Another version says that a Maierhof should have stood in the southern area of Karl. The owner was called Karl. He had two daughters, one of whom was named Kathl. In her will, she bequeathed all of her property to the village and made the condition that a chapel in honor of St. Catherine be built in the village. Presumably the name of her father was transferred to the place. The naming of localities after one of their first settlers was common in the eastern colonization areas. The name could also be derived from the daughter herself: Kathl → Karl
The Hungarian name Repcekaroly was used while it belonged to the Hungarian county of Ödenburg ( Sopron ) . ( Repce / Rabnitz , 'Karl an der Rabnitz')
politics
The head of the village is Sabine Schlögl.
