Franz Emil Lorenz Graf Wimpffen (born April 2, 1797 in Prague , † November 26, 1870 in Gorizia ) was an Austrian field warrior .

Life

Franz Emil Lorenz came from the old Swabian noble family von Wimpffen . He was the son of Karl Franz Eduard Reichsgraf von Wimpffen (1776–1842) from his first marriage to Vicoria von Anhalt-Bernburg-Schaumburg, a widowed hereditary princess of Hesse-Philippsthal. A distant relative was Field Marshal Maximilian von Wimpffen , a comrade Radetzky .

In October 1813 he joined the imperial army as a sub-lieutenant in the 5th Jäger Battalion. In Infantry Regiment No. 16 he took part in the campaigns of 1813 and 1814 in the main army of the allies as a first lieutenant . He spent the campaign of 1815 with the Frimont army in Italy. In 1822 he was promoted to captain and in 1828 to major. In 1830 he became lieutenant colonel , in 1833 he was promoted to colonel and took over command of the "Grand Duke of Baden" infantry regiment. On September 27, 1839 he was major general and brigade commander in Trieste , on November 16, 1846 Lieutenant Field Marshal and division commander of the II Army Corps in Padua .

As a result, he distinguished himself under FML Aspre in the campaign of 1848 . For his missions in the Battle of Vicenza on June 10, in the battles at Sona and Sommacampagna (23 and 24 July), the capture of the heights of Madonna del Monte on July 25 in the Battle of Custozza and his conduct in During the Battle of Volta (July 27), he was awarded the Knight's Cross for the Military Order of Maria Theresa on November 27, 1848 .

In the campaign of 1849 he took over the Combined Division (Brigade Eduard Liechtenstein and Cavriani) formed on March 21 and covered the Po crossing at Casale, while Radetzky's main army ended the campaign against Sardinia-Piedmont victorious in the battle of Novara . At the head of the corps intended to intervene in the Papal States, he forced Bologna to surrender on May 16 and Ancona on June 19 through artillery fire and then took over the leadership of the government of the legations. In October 1849 he was appointed civil and military governor of Trieste and governor of the coastal country.

For his services in Italy he was awarded the Commander's Cross for the Order of Maria Theresa on March 26, 1850 . After Vice Admiral Hans Birch von Dahlerup left the service of the Imperial and Royal Navy in August 1851, he was entrusted with the provisional high command of the Navy , as the brother of Emperor Franz Joseph , Archduke Ferdinand Max, appeared too young for this position. In this function he continued the reorganization of the naval forces in a profitable way.

After retiring as naval commander in chief, he was appointed Feldzeugmeister on April 24, 1854. From September 1854 he commanded the 1st Army Corps for a time; In June 1859, under the command of General of the Cavalry Franz von Schlick, he led the 1st Army in the Battle of Solferino, which was fatal for the monarchy . He retired on September 11, 1860 and died in Gorizia on November 26, 1870 .
