Francis Mary of the Cross Jordan
Father Franziskus Maria vom Kreuz Jordan , born as Johann Baptist Jordan , (born June 16, 1848 in Gurtweil , † September 8, 1918 in Tafers , Switzerland ) was a Catholic priest and founder of an order .
life and work
Johann Baptist Jordan came from the poorest of backgrounds. His father died when he was 14 years old. This stroke of fate changed his character: if he was previously enterprising, his attitude to life was from now on characterized by eagerness to learn, withdrawnness and privation. After leaving school, he first learned the profession of decorative painter and temporarily hired himself as a gang worker laying railroad tracks before he made up his Abitur at the age of 26 . This was followed by the study of theology and philosophy at the Albert Ludwig University of Freiburg . Here he became a member of the KDStV Arminia student association in the Cartell Association of German Catholic student associations in 1875 . In 1878 he was ordained a priest .
Since he could not practice his priesthood in Germany because of the anti-Catholic culture war laws, he moved to Rome , where he studied Aramaic , Syrian and Coptic languages at the papal seminary . After an educational trip to the Orient , on December 8, 1881, he founded the “Society of the Divine Savior” ( Salvatorians ) for external and internal missions and took the name of Father Francis Mary of the Cross Jordan.
On December 8th, 1888 he founded the order of the “Sisters of the Divine Savior” (Salvatorian Sisters) with Baroness Therese von Wüllenweber , known by the religious name “Mother Mary of the Apostles”.
The order of the Salvatorians received papal approbation in 1911 . In the years that followed, Francis Mary of the Cross Jordan devoted himself to stabilizing his work. He initiated several branches in Europe, North and South America and India.
Because of his poor health and the outbreak of World War I, Franziskus Maria vom Kreuz Jordan moved the seat of the order from Rome to neutral Switzerland, namely to Friborg . He died on September 8, 1918 in Tafers (Switzerland). His remains were recovered on September 12, 1956 and transferred to the Generalate in Rome.
beatification
In 1942 the beatification process was initiated. Since in the course of the investigation uncertainties arose about a conflict between him and a co-founder, the beatification was not carried out until 2020.
In a commemorative mass in Gurtweil on June 21, 2020 with the Salvatorian Padres Peter Daubner and Bernhard Fuhrmann, "the impending beatification" was celebrated:
“The beatification process has now been completed and a theological commission in Rome accepted the miracle at the intercession of Father Jordan. The medical miracle consists in the scientific inexplicability of the healthy birth of an embryo which doctors have described as being massively malformed. The parents had prayed daily with a Salvatorian lay group for the intercession of Father Jordan. On September 8, 2015, the anniversary of Father Jordan’s death, the [child] Lívia Maria Cordoso Silva was born perfectly healthy. "
"As early as 2011, the life and virtuous conduct of Father Jordan was declared by the Church as 'heroic', that is, fully in the spirit of the Gospel."
On June 19, 2020, Pope Francis completed the process. “Now all that remains to be done is to determine the date and place of the beatification ceremony by the Holy See . The Salvatorian family is expecting the festivities this year. "
In 2009 the Wüllenweber-und-Jordan-Platz in Vienna- Hietzing (13th district) was named after him and Therese von Wüllenweber.
