The Fraunhofer Institute for Material Flow and Logistics (Fraunhofer IML) is an institution of the Fraunhofer Society . Established in 1981 under the name of the Fraunhofer Institute for Transport Technology and Goods Distribution ITW established Institute is based in Dortmund , its activities are of applied research in the subject of engineering with the alignment material handling systems and the professional logistics with the orientations of enterprise logistics , transport and environmental associate .

Research priorities

The institute is divided into three areas:

Material flow systems

The spectrum ranges from the planning of material flow systems through the feasibility study to the prototype . In the “Demonstration Center for Material Flow and Logistics”, new developments go through various test phases up to the pilot system. Individual solutions and product developments are worked out in the institute's workshops and laboratories . The implementation extends to special machine construction .

Corporate logistics

The design of business processes within and between companies is one of the tasks of this area. Proven methods such as process chain management and simulation tools are used to structure , localize inefficient processes and determine cost and performance potential . Here the Fraunhofer IML draws on its own developments and proven software available on the market.

Logistics, traffic and the environment

The institute supports companies in their environmental management with concepts for circular economy with process-integrated avoidance and recycling concepts as well as for dismantling and redistribution and the entire information management of material flows and life cycle assessment. Transport logistic concepts of network planning, distribution and disposition, supported by telematics systems, are used by the transport logisticians in their work.
The “Airport Project Center” in Frankfurt is developing special airport and air freight solutions. Tourism logistics and cross-border freight transport form the task areas of the "Project Center Transport, Mobility and Environment" in Prien am Chiemsee.

The topic of the Internet of Things is managed Fraunhofer-wide at Fraunhofer IML. If necessary, the IML can fall back on 17,000 employees in 80 Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft facilities . In addition, Fraunhofer IML is involved in a research project in the Fraunhofer future topic of food chain management .

In addition, the further development and design of a social networked industry is largely carried out by the institute. In the BMBF research project Innovation Laboratory Hybrid Services in Logistics , the scientists are developing technological innovations with a human-centered perspective .

Cooperations

The Fraunhofer IML cooperates with a number of international scientific facilities and institutions.

There is a cooperation with the Technical University of Dortmund , which covers the basic research needs of the Fraunhofer IML and is favored by the dual functions of the institute director (who also holds a chair at the university). Another cooperation exists with the European Distance Learning University in Hamburg (Euro-FH), with which, among other things, the bachelor's degree in logistics management was developed and with which there is a professional exchange.

In addition to Dortmund, there are other locations in Hamburg , Frankfurt am Main and Prien am Chiemsee as well as agencies in Lisbon and Beijing . Project centers are located in Prien and Frankfurt, and a "Fraunhofer Center for Maritime Logistics" managed as a department in Hamburg.

Infrastructure

Around 318 employees worked at Fraunhofer IML in 2019. The operating budget in the 2019 financial year was 33.1 million euros. Around 43% of this comes from industry and 34% from public funds.

The institute is headed by the three directors Uwe Clausen , Michael Henke and Michael ten Hompel (executive director), who all also hold chairs at the Technical University of Dortmund.

In 2004 the so-called openID-center emerged from the project of the same name, which has since served as a test environment for AutoID applications in cooperation with logistics and IT companies.
