The black ash ( Fraxinus nigra ) is a plant from the genus of the ash ( Fraxinus ) in the family of Oleaceae (Oleaceae).

description

The black ash is a deciduous tree that reaches heights of up to 25 meters. It has a gray, flaky bark. The branches are round and bare. The winter buds are almost black in color. The dark green, imparipinnate leaves consist of seven to eleven serrate leaflets . The leaves smell of grated elderberry .

The black ash is dioeciously separated sexes ( diocesan ). The flowers are too many in a panicle inflorescence. There are hermaphroditic and unisexual flowers that have no petals and sepals.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 46.

Occurrence

The distribution area of the black ash extends furthest north of the North American ash species . The northern border runs from Newfoundland to southeastern Manitoba , the southern border from Iowa through western Virginia to Delaware . It rises to an altitude of 1050 meters. The black ash occurs on wet soils in alluvial forests , in moors and swamps. It forms mixed forests with the balsam fir , red maple , paper birch , American elm and occidental tree of life .

In Central Europe it is hardy and is occasionally grown as an ornamental wood.

use

The wood of the black ash has a dark brown core. It is less elastic, lighter and softer than the wood of red ash and white ash and is therefore less in demand. Baskets and chairs are woven and barrels are made from thin, narrow strips of wood. It is also used (often referred to as swamp ash) in the manufacture of instruments, primarily for electric guitars.
