Frederic Brewster Loomis
Frederic Brewster Loomis (born November 22, 1873 in Brooklyn , New York , † July 28, 1937 in Sitka , Alaska Territory ) was an American paleontologist and professor at Amherst College .
Life
Loomis went to school in Rochester and studied at Amherst College with a bachelor's degree in 1896. He then went to the Ludwig Maximilians University of Munich in 1897 , where he received his doctorate in paleontology in 1899 under Karl Alfred von Zittel . He then returned to Amherst College as an instructor , becoming Associate Professor of Biology in 1903 , Professor of Comparative Anatomy in 1908 and Professor of Geology and Mineralogy in 1917. He was also the vice president of the college. He died of a brain haemorrhage while on vacation in Alaska.
As a paleontologist, he was primarily concerned with vertebrate paleontology and excavated tertiary mammals in Patagonia (1911/12), New Mexico , South Dakota (Badlands), Nebraska ( Sioux County ), Wyoming (Wasatch Basin, Converse County ), Colorado , Arizona , Florida and Maine . The fossil finds ended up in the Natural History Museum of Amherst College, today's Beneski Museum of Natural History .
In 1920 he was President of the Paleontological Society . He was a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (1917) and the Geological Society of America .
He had been married since 1904 and had two children.
