Frederick H. Sheldon

Frederick Halsey "Fred" Sheldon (born December 14, 1951 in Hörsching ) is an American ornithologist .

Life

Sheldon was born the son of Americans in Upper Austria . In 1974 he received a Bachelor of Science degree in geology and geophysics from Yale University . From 1974 to 1975 he worked as a house painter in New Jersey . From 1975 to 1976 he was a laboratory technician in microbiology at New York University . From 1976 to 1978 he took part as a field ornithologist on expeditions at Yale University in Australia , Borneo and India . From 1978 to 1986 he studied biology at Yale University, where he graduated with a Master of Science in 1981 and in 1986 with the dissertation A Study of the Evolution and Phylogeny of Herons (Ardeidae) using DNA-DNA Hybridization under the direction of Charles Sibley to the Ph .D. received his doctorate. From 1981 to 1983 he was director of the field program for the Western Foundation of Vertebrate Zoology in Malaysia . From 1986 to 1987 he was an assistant professor at San Francisco State University . In 1989 he was visiting professor at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia in Sabah . From 1991 to 1993 he was an associate professor at the University of Pennsylvania . From 1987 to 1993 he was assistant curator and then deputy curator at the Academy of Natural Sciences , Philadelphia . From 1994 to 2000 he was associate curator and associate professor at Louisiana State University . From 2000 to 2007 he was an associate professor in the Life Sciences Department at Louisiana State University. He has been a curator for genetic resources since 2000. Since 2001 he has been director of the LSU Museum of Natural Science. He has been Professor of Natural Sciences since 2005 and Professor of Life Sciences at Louisiana State University since 2007 .

Sheldon has been a member of the American Ornithological Society since 1991 (American Ornithologists' Union until 2016), where he served as Treasurer from 1993 to 2000 and as Vice President from 2002 to 2003. From 1999 to 2003 he worked in the editorial department of The Auk magazine . Has worked for Raffles Bulletin of Zoology since 2000 and for The Condor since 2008 .

Sheldon's research interests are the molecular systematics , the evolution and the systematics of birds, the natural history of the birds of the Malay Archipelago, the reconstruction of phylogenies of bird families and the use of phylogenesis as a framework for research into the evolution of ecology, behavior and distribution in the present .

In 2001 Sheldon published the book Ornithology of Sabah: History, Gazetteer, Annotated Checklist, and Bibliography . In 2009 he and Anita Gamauf and other colleagues established the genus Cryptoleucopteryx for the lead buzzard . In the same year he wrote, in collaboration with Rob Moyle, the family chapter Pityriaseidae for the wart head in Volume 14 of the Handbook of the Birds of the World . In 2013 he was one of the first to describe the Cambodia tailor bird .
