Frederico Westphalen , officially Portuguese Município de Frederico Westphalen , is a city in the southernmost Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul with an officially estimated population of 31,313 in 2019. The distance to the capital Porto Alegre is 434 kilometers.

Within Rio Grande do Sul, the place is in the north at an altitude of 566 meters. The climate is subtropical humid , according to the climate classification by Köppen and Geiger Cfa .

Surrounding places are Caiçara , Vicente Dutra , Iraí , Ametista do Sul , Cristal do Sul , Seberi , Taquaruçu do Sul and Vista Alegre .

history

On August 6, 1918, the Frederico Westphalen district was established within the municipality of Palmeira das Missões with the capital Vila de Frederico Westphalen . The place received on December 15, 1954 the city rights as Município de Frederico Westphalen , the district was spun off from Palmeiras and received some area from Iraí . It was named after a German engineer who was responsible for regional development and infrastructure.

Politics and administration

The executive as city prefect (mayor) has José Alberto Panosso from the Partido do Movimento Democrático Brasileiro (PMDB) for the term of office 2017 to 2020 . The legislature lies with a city council (Câmara Municipal).

City structure

As of 2017, the area of ​​264.975 km² of the municipal area is divided into three districts: Sede (seat of the municipality ), the Distrito de Castelinho and the Distrito de Osvaldo Cruz. The urban core (Sede) is in turn divided into 16 bairros (districts).

education

Frederico Westphalen is the seat of the Universidade Regional Integrada do Alto Uruguay e Missões (URI). The Universidade Federal de Santa Maria (UFSM) also has a campus in Frederico Westphalen .

The population of the municipality had an illiteracy rate of 14.1% in 1991 , which had already fallen to 6% in the 2010 census.

Sports

The football club União Frederiquense de Futebol was founded on August 3, 2010, and it plays in the state championships in Rio Grande do Sul. Its home stadium is the Estádio Vermelhão da Colina (officially Estádio João Pastre ) with a capacity of 5,000 .
