Career

Beginnings

Fredrik Gjesbakk started the IBU Cup for the first time in Ruhpolding in 2014 . There, in his second race, with a seventh place, he immediately achieved a top ten placement. In the following season Gjesbakk did not start. In the 2015/16 season he only took part in races in two IBU Cup locations and again achieved seventh place in the individual race in Osrblie .

2016/17 season - first World Cup appearance

In the following season Gjesbakk took part in almost all races and achieved sixth place in the overall standings thanks to his good placement. In the sprint in Ridnaun he achieved his first victory in the IBU Cup, and he also took three more podium places in the season. In Nové Město and Pyeongchang he took part in one race each of the biathlon world cup and ended up well outside the points. Due to its sixth place in the overall ranking of the IBU Cup, the Norwegian Association received an additional starting place at the season finale of the World Cup in Oslo . There Gjesbakk was able to qualify as the last starter for the mass start with a 25th place in the sprint and a 20th place in the pursuit. In the mass start he reached 23rd place.

At the 2017 European Championships in Duszniki-Zdrój , Gjesbakk achieved two top ten results in sprint and pursuit and a twelfth place in the individual race. In the mixed relay race he won the silver medal with Karoline Erdal , Marion Rønning Huber and Erlend Bjøntegaard .

2017/18 season - second in the overall IBU Cup

In the 2017/18 season , Gjesbakk mainly started in the IBU Cup. There he was able to achieve five podium places by the European Championships in 2018 , but did not win a race. He took part in the last World Cup races of 2017 in Annecy . There he achieved his best World Cup result with a seventh place in the sprint. Due to the fact that he was only 39th in the subsequent pursuit, he could not qualify for the mass start.

At the European Championships in Ridnaun , Gjesbakk, like last year, came seventh in the pursuit after finishing 20th in the sprint. In the individual, he finished 24th. In the mixed relay race he won the bronze medal with Emilie Ågheim Kalkenberg , Kaia Wøien Nicolaisen and Håvard Bogetveit .

After the European Championships, he was able to achieve a top ten result in each of the following two races in the IBU Cup. In the remaining races of this season, however, he did not get past eleventh place in any race. Due to his good preliminary work, he nevertheless achieved 2nd place in the overall ranking of the IBU Cup. As in the previous year, this gave him a starting place at the World Cup finals. In the sprint he was only 69th and could not qualify for the pursuit. Thanks to his good sprint in Annecy, he nevertheless reached 51st place in the sprint ranking.
