Fredrik Strømstad (born January 2, 1982 in Kristiansand ) is a former Norwegian football player .

Club career

Child from Kristiansand

Strømstad began his career at the age of four in the youth of his home club IK Start . There he went through all youth teams before he got a contract for the professional department at the age of 18. In the first year without a job, he was given a regular place in his second season. At the end of the season they took second place in the table and rose to the Tippeligaen . A disaster season followed. Start occupied the last place in the table from the first round and was not ready for the first division in all respects. Strømstad himself, often played provocatively and, above all, completely left out defensive work. As a result, the sporting management from the start came to the realization that they could not use his young star in the relegation battle and awarded him to the third division club Bærum SK .

While Start at the end of the season went down quietly from the Tippeligaen, Strømstad celebrated with Bærum the championship title in the 2nd Division Group 2 and the associated promotion to the Adeccoligaen . He contributed two goals in seven games this season.

As a result, Start brought his "prodigal son" back home, where Strømstad presented himself as purified. He also showed combative facets and took on more and more responsibility in Kristiansund's game. He also harmonized better and better with the talent Kristofer Hæstad , who also came from Kristiansand , so that Start suddenly had one of Norway's most talented midfield duos in his ranks.

In 2004 they celebrated the undisputed return to the highest Norwegian league, where they should cause a sensation in a row. With an outstanding Strømstad they fought for the championship title in Norway until the last lap and were only one point behind Vålerenga Oslo . His achievements did not go unnoticed by the Norwegian national team coach Åge Hareide , who nominated him for Norway for the first time . During the season there were several poaching attempts from Norway such as Rosenborg Trondheim or Brann Bergen , all of which he rejected. As a result, he announced in an interview that he would never play for another club in Norway:

"Rosenborg and Brann wanted me, but it would be a mistake for a player like me, a child from Kristiansand, to move to another Norwegian club"

In the 2006 season he briefly lost his congenial midfield partner Hæstad, who moved to England on loan to Wigan Athletic . This was also noticeable with a 6th place in the end table. 2007 was followed by another weak season, which ended for start with another, albeit unfortunate, relegation to the Adeccoligaen. At that time, Strømstad had already attracted the interest of several clubs, mainly from France. At the insistence of his club, which, traditionally financially weak, still wanted to achieve transfer proceeds, he subsequently negotiated with Stade Rennes and AS Monaco . However, he did not reach an agreement with either club. He played twelve more games for start in the Adeccoligaen before he was signed by Le Mans UC . As a result, Strømstad, who had meanwhile been appointed captain, was bid farewell to thunderous applause in the home game against Kongsvinger IL . Due to his connection to the club, he was the absolute darling of the public at the start. The fact that the change took place mainly at the insistence of the club sparked various fan protests. Among other things, it was requested that the shirt number 7, which Strømstad had for a long time, should no longer be given.

With Helstad in France

Le Mans, which had to cope with the departure of almost all star players such as Túlio de Melo , Marko Baša or Romaric , signed him in a double pack with his compatriot Thorstein Helstad . In his first two outings of the season for Le Mans, he prepared a Helstad goal. The new "Norwegian Axis" was quickly celebrated. As a result, the team also started the season well, but also dismantled again early on. Together with the team, Strømstad's performance deteriorated. In the end, he couldn't score a goal in 23 appearances this season and only had four assists on his credit side. Le Mans finished the season in 16th place in the table. As a result, his career stalled due to injury. After only four league games in one and a half seasons, Le Mans, now relegated , gave him back to the start where he should find his old form again. But even at the start he continued to struggle with various injuries and only played twenty games without scoring in two loan seasons. In the 2011/12 season he played 13 league games for Le Mans before moving back to Kristiansand after his contract expired. As a result, he celebrated the championship title in the Adeccoliga with the club and the associated immediate promotion to the Tippeligaen , before he ended his professional career at the age of 30. In 2014 he celebrated a comeback for the then Norwegian seventh division club Tigerberget FK , from 2015 to 2016 he played for FK Donn on an amateur basis.

National team

Strømstad was a regular in the Norwegian U-16, U-17 and U-19 selection. For the U-21 selection, he only ran twice due to mixed performances in the club. Participation in a European or World Youth Championship was denied.

From 2005 he was also active for the Norwegian national football team . He made his debut on October 12, 2005 in the qualifier for the 2006 World Cup in Germany against Belarus . He played his last international match on February 11, 2009 in a 0-1 away win against Germany .
