Joe Sarcone approaches him and tells him that he was his father's partner and that he should go to a bar where he is waiting for him. Malo does. He works with LaRue and quickly realizes he's a drug addict.

When Malo and LaRue are on the patrol, they are called in as reinforcements. They arrive and see two police cars with four policemen, two colored and two white, who point their guns at a colored man who threatens another with a gun. When Malo and LaRue get out, LaRue takes command and has him drop the gun. Officer Burke tries to arrest the suspect, but Officer Morrison tries to handcuff him himself . When she says he's selling marijuana , he breaks down the apartment door and searches the apartment. He comes across money and the promised marijuana. When one of the girls sees that he is pocketing the money, LaRue shoots the girl. The other one runs away and Malo follows, shortly afterwards she is run over by the bus and is dead.
