action

The film takes place in an alternate reality, whose strange properties only gradually become clearer to the audience. In the world of film narration, class differences are not a result of history, but are subject to the laws of nature: Children are born with a certain 'frequency' which, although invisible to the naked eye, affects fate in later life. The frequency 1 means to be haunted by bad luck forever, 100 is the exact opposite.

Zak has a very low frequency, and although he is forbidden to enter into a romantic relationship with a person whose frequency is very high, the teenager falls in love with the emotionally cold Marie of all people. The greater the frequency differences, the less compatible a couple is, and this also has very practical consequences: If the two spend too long time together, nature cannot withstand this imbalance. If Zak and Marie stand together for more than 60 seconds, unusual things happen - for example, a mini-thunderstorm forms in the sky over Zak, or luggage falls from a scheduled airplane, or all the dogs in the area are attacking. In order to still be with the girl of his dreams, Zak is looking for a method to bypass the laws of nature. However, all of his attempts are only temporarily successful.

The first part of the story is told three times, first from Marie's point of view, then from Zak's point of view and finally from Theo's point of view.

Already in his childhood Theo knew from his father about the 'manual', which contains two-syllable words that work like spells and temporarily influence the 'frequency' of people. As a composer, his father explains that complex music makes the words in the manual ineffective because the compositions put too much strain on the neural network . Especially since Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart , the use of the 'manual' has therefore gradually declined. Theo finds something else in Mozart's music: a special pattern. This pattern strengthens his belief that everything that happens is completely determined . He is working on software that will ultimately - he is convinced - reliably predict all human actions and all events. On the other hand, Theo seems to be helping to match Zak and Marie's frequencies, and apparently he is the mastermind behind all developments in the story. If Theo is right as a staunch determinist, then his willful manipulations as a puppeteer were just as predetermined as everything else.

reception

In Frequencies is a love story with echoes of Orwell and Huxley. The film mixes science fiction and romance into a story in which two people are not allowed to have a love relationship because nature forbids it. Oliver Armknecht from film-rezensions.de particularly emphasizes the well-considered use of the scarce resources by the makers of the film: From the beginning, director and screenwriter Darren Paul Fisher has gone his own way, showing that you can get a gripping science even with a minimal budget. Fi-telling a story when the ideas are there. At Rotten Tomatoes , Frequencies was able to convince all critics (100% of 7 reviews, as of July 15, 2018) . The audience gave him 4 out of 5 points. The film received a Kansas City FilmFest Award from the jury at the 2014 Kansas City FilmFest for its narrative structure .
