Friendship Prize (China)
The Friendship Award of the People's Republic of China ( Chinese 中华人民共和国友谊奖 ; Pinyin Zhōnghuá Rénmín Gònghéguó Youyi jiǎng; English: Friendship Award) is the highest award of the People's Republic of China for foreign experts who contribute to the economic and social development in China. In addition to a medal, a certificate is awarded. Since it was first awarded in 1991, it has usually taken place around October 1st ( national holiday - founding of the People's Republic of China ). By 2007, 949 experts from 56 countries had received the award, two years later there were 1099 awardees.
precursor
The award was introduced in the 1950s by then Prime Minister Zhou Enlai and Foreign Minister Chen Yi and presented to experts from the Soviet Union and other Eastern European countries. On September 15, 1955, the Chinese government decreed that every Soviet expert leaving the country should receive a medal. This medal showed the flags of China and the Soviet Union with the inscription Long live the Sino-Soviet friendship ( Chinese 中 苏 友谊 万岁 ; Pinyin Zhōngsū Youyì Wànsuì). With the Sino-Soviet rift in the early 1960s, this practice ended.
