Chad A. Mirkin
Chad Alexander Mirkin (born November 23, 1963 in Phoenix , Arizona ) is an American chemist .
Life
Mirkin earned a bachelor's degree in chemistry from Dickinson College in Carlisle , Pennsylvania in 1986 . In 1989 he was at the Pennsylvania State University in State College , Pennsylvania in Gregory L. Geoffroy with the work The chemistry of binuclear iron complexes posse sing bridging organic ligands doctorate . He worked as a postdoctoral fellow at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Cambridge , Massachusetts .
Mirkin has been Professor of Chemistry at Northwestern University since 1991 , initially as Assistant Professor and since 1995 as Associate Professor . In 1997 he received his first full professorship there (Charles E. and Emma H. Morrison Professor of Chemistry) , in 2000 he became George B. Rathmann Professor of Chemistry . From 2000 to 2004 he was director of the Center for Nanofabrication and Molecular Self-Assembly , since 2004 he has been director of the International Institute for Nanotechnology and has held additional professorships for medicine and materials science , and since 2008 for chemical and biological engineering .
Act
Mirkin is considered to be the discoverer of spherical nucleic acids (SNAs). For over two decades he designed and constructed the architectural features of these materials in order to define their novel structure-function relationships in the context of material technology , molecular diagnostics, gene regulation and immunomodulation .
Mirkin is also a pioneer in the development of nanoparticle- based biosensors and dip-pen nanolithography ( dip-pen = penholder , nanolithography ) and has made important contributions to supramolecular chemistry , nanoelectronics and nano-optics .
He founded several biotechnology companies: Nanosphere , NanoInk , Aurasense and AuraSense Therapeutics .
Mirkin has published over 500 scientific publications , eleven of which (as of October 2013) were cited more than 1,000 times , one work almost 3,000 times. Since 2013 Thomson Reuters has counted him among the favorites for a Nobel Prize ( Thomson Reuters Citation Laureates ) due to the number of his citations . Google Scholar counts a total of around 149,000 citations (as of January 2019), including more than 6,900 for the work mentioned. Mirkin therefore has an h-index of 170.
