Career

From 1958 to 1962 he also studied zoology and botany in parallel at the University of Mainz . He completed his studies with a medical state examination in 1963 and received his doctorate in 1964 .
From 1965 Samii was a scientific assistant at the Neurosurgical University Clinic in Mainz with Kurt Schürmann and in 1970 he was recognized as a specialist in neurosurgery . Appointments as first senior physician and deputy clinic director followed. In the same year he received his habilitation in neurosurgery. Also in 1970 Samii founded a school for microsurgery, in which he taught his microscopic surgical procedure developed in 1967 . In 1971, Samii was appointed adjunct professor . In 1974 Samiis was appointed scientific advisor and professor at a scientific university.
In 1977 he became director of the neurosurgical clinic in the Nordstadtkrankenhaus in Hanover . In 1986 he took over the chair of neurosurgery at the University of Leiden in the Netherlands , and in 1988 at the Hannover Medical School (MHH). Samii is married and has two children. His son Amir Samii is also a neurosurgeon and professor, as well as Vice President and Deputy Medical Director of the International Neuroscience Institute .
Services
In the 1960s, Samii developed imaging techniques that made operations on the brain much safer. He was the first in Germany in 1967 operating microscopes introduced in neurosurgery, making operations of nerves and vessels in the brain were gewebsschonender possible.
In the 1970s and 1980s he researched syringomyelia and other diseases of the spinal cord .
To this day, he has enabled many previously completely deaf patients to hear again by using a microchip connected to the nerve cells in the brain stem. Samii is currently researching surgical methods to heal paraplegics.
In 1992, in collaboration with Peter-Michael Zink, he developed the zinc Samii screw for the spine.
