history

Municipal Hospital I.

At the end of the 19th century, around 200,000 people lived in Hanover. For the medical care of the residents, besides the hospitals in church or private sponsorship, only one city hospital was available: the Hospital am Ihmeufer (later the Linden Dermatology Clinic ), which had been established in 1833 as the successor to the city hospital on Hohen Ufer. At that time it had a surgery, a syphilis ward for women and a department for the “mentally ill” with a total of 122 beds. Therefore, around 1880, the planning for a large new city hospital began. Initially, this was to be built on the Große Bult, the current location of the children's hospital on the Bult . Later, the decision was made for the current location in the northern part of the city between Halthoffstrasse and An der Strangriede . On 27 August 1891, the foundation stone of which was Urban hospital I .

The group of buildings was built mainly according to plans by Paul Rowald in the pavilion style by the entrepreneur Max Küster . The building was handed over on January 31, 1895, and the inauguration took place on February 1. The construction costs amounted to three million marks.

The facility consisted of five two-storey pavilions for 3rd class patients, a three-storey pavilion for 1st and 2nd class patients, and six single-storey isolation pavilions. There was also an operation house, a pathological institute, an administration building, a farm building with a kitchen and a steam laundry, a boiler and machine house, a disinfection facility and two small houses for "guards". The focus was on surgery and the clinic for infectious diseases.

During the time of National Socialism, forced sterilizations were carried out at the Municipal Hospital I due to the law for the prevention of genetically ill offspring .

After the Second World War the hospital was renamed the Städtisches Krankenhaus Nordstadt . The historic building complex is now a listed building . In 1954 a sister house with 82 places was built.

State women's clinic

This clinic was on August 5, 1781 after approval by King George III. was founded as Accouchir Hospital in Hanover , and served as a “maternity hospital for homeless illegitimate pregnant women and a midwifery school”. In 1864 it became the maternity and midwifery school in the royal residence city of Hanover , and in 1949 the Lower Saxony state women's clinic and midwifery school in Hanover .
