Frida Christaller

Frida Christaller (born August 21, 1898 in Stuttgart ; † October 8, 1991 ) was a German sculptor who was best known for her Christmas cribs .

life and work

The daughter of Professor Paul Gottfried Christaller first studied at the Württemberg School of Applied Arts in Stuttgart. From 1925 to 1930 she studied at the Württemberg Academy of Fine Arts in Stuttgart with the sculptor Ludwig Habich . From 1930 she worked in her own studio in the Heusteigviertel in Stuttgart. The artist, who came from a Protestant family, was influenced by the pietistic union of the Köngener and was enthusiastic about the peace movement and - like her father - all her life for the planned language Esperanto .

Frida Christaller's nativity scenes made of clay or wood can be found in Protestant churches in her native Württemberg. In addition to the holy family and shepherds from the Christmas story, she often added a group of children to the cribs. The figures of the Great Altar Crib , created in 1938 for the Markuskirche in Stuttgart, were sold in smaller versions in the arts and crafts trade for a long time and were popular in Protestant rectories and private households.

In addition to her work as a sculptor, she also created silhouettes, such as the illustrations for the pacifist children's book Pazifistische Kinderwelt by Otto Volkart and Anni Roettcher-Mertens (Stuttgart 1919).
