Frieda Rosenthal (born June 9, 1891 in Berlin as Frieda Schrinner ; † October 15, 1936 there ) was a Berlin local politician and resistance fighter against the Nazi regime .

Life

Frieda Schrinner was born into a working-class family and learned to be a seamstress after attending the community school. Until 1919 she had worked in a clothing factory. After the First World War, she worked as a (untrained) carer. She found a job in the social welfare office in the municipality of Lichtenberg . It was not until 1930 that she passed the required final examination at the social policy seminar of the German University of Politics .

In 1919 she became a member of the USPD and was elected to the Lichtenberg district assembly the following year. Here Frieda, who had meanwhile married and was now called Rosenthal, moved to the KPD . In 1929 she was appointed city councilor in the Mitte district office on behalf of the KPD . When the German communists began to approve of the purge course in the Soviet Union based on the Stalin model, she opposed it. She signed a statement and was expelled from that party. In the early 1930s, Frieda joined the SPD , on whose behalf she led the political work of the SPD group in Friedrichshain . Frieda Rosenthal was a member of the Berlin-Kreuzberg district from 1932 to 1933 . Because they their communist attitude especially after the takeover of the Nazis remained loyal, she was active in the anti-fascist resistance and was arrested in 1936 therefore. During the interrogations and torture in Berlin-Moabit prison , attempts were made to induce them to reveal the names of other party officials:

When she had admitted a contact and named a name during an interrogation on October 15, 1936, she wrote to the investigating magistrate of the People's Court, back in her cell: 'Herr Landgerichtsdirektor, I definitely believe that I am due to poor personal memory in today's comparison wrongly charged a person.

Frieda Rosenthal was ultimately charged with preparing for high treason , which resulted in the death penalty. In order not to reveal anyone during the torture, she hanged herself on the radiator in her prison cell.

Honors

There was a memorial plaque for Frieda Rosenthal on Rathausstrasse in Berlin-Mitte .

The Socialist Memorial Area at the Friedrichsfelde Central Cemetery honors deserved anti-fascists, not only through the graves or the urn wall, but also on a large memorial plaque made of red porphyry. This is entitled "Glory and Honor to the Immortal Fighters for Socialism" and is included in the historical sections (1) "In the time of the Weimar Republic", (2) "In the Spanish struggle for freedom" and (3) "Murdered by the fascists" structured. This name wall on the right inside the curtain wall was created in 1969 from the previous 27 individual panels. The name of Frieda Rosenthal is chiseled under the "R".

In 2005, the Active Museum Association organized an exhibition on behalf of the Senate and the Berlin House of Representatives “Put in front of the door. City councilors and members of the magistrate persecuted under National Socialism 1933–1945 ”. First, the fate of Frieda Rosenthal and 31 other personalities was remembered in the coat of arms hall of the Red Town Hall (in September and October 2005), and in the following year in the rooms of the House of Representatives (June and July 2006).

Frieda Rosenthal Prize
