The Friedenskirche in Kitzingen

The Friedenskirche in the settlement district of Kitzingen is the house of worship of the young Evangelical Lutheran congregation. It was built on Martin-Luther-Straße not far from the Roman Catholic St. Vincent Church . Today the church is part of the Evangelical Lutheran Dean's Office in Kitzingen .

history

The history of the church is closely linked to that of the settlement district . The development of the area south of Etwashausen began as early as the 1920s . Between 1922 and 1927 the first residential buildings were built around what is now Texasweg. By the 1930s, the number of Evangelical Lutheran residents in the new settlement district rose to around 300.

The expulsions of World War II led to a rapid increase in the number of Lutherans in Kitzingen. The old town of Kitzingen had been partially destroyed and extensive new residential buildings were built in the settlement area for the displaced from the former German areas in Eastern Europe. Soon a church association was founded that collected money for a new church building. In 1955 the foundation stone was laid in the east of Kitzingen; the Sunday services took place before 1955 in the Protestant kindergarten built in 1952.

The church building was completed by 1957 and was consecrated on May 30; the first parish priest was Wilhelm Zahn. At first the community belonged to the Protestant town church of Kitzingen . In 1965 the peace parish became independent. The church's furnishings were completed by the 1990s.

architecture

The architectural design of the Friedenskirche comes from Gerhard Saalfrank from Würzburg. The church presents itself as a large hall building . It is easted and ends with a rectangular choir. All elements of the church are made of red brick . The wide, rectangular west tower forms the facade. It was placed with the long side in front of the building and ends with a gable roof . Two semicircular apses were added to the left and right of the tower. The sides of the nave are completely windowed, the windows are only separated by wide strips.

Furnishing

The font was created by Klaus Rother from Kitzingen. It is relatively simple and ends with the figure of a dove. The pictures of the evangelists in the pulpit were made by Theo Steinbrenner in 1977. Several bronze sculptures were created by Irene Dilling. In the course of the 1990s he created “The Holy Family” (1990), “ Pietà ” (1991) and “Healing Encounter” (1995). The stained glass window in the apse was created by Gerd Jähnke from Munich in 1957, while the two angels above the entrance were created by the artist Sonnleitner .

Bells

In the cross-rectangular tower of the Friedenskirche hangs a three-part bell that was cast in 1986 in the Bachert / Friedrichshall bell foundry . The bells sound in a Gloria motif.
