The Evangelical Methodist Church of Peace , built according to the design by Karl Gerhard Witte 1949–1950, is located at Handjerystraße 52 in the Berlin district of Friedenau in what is now the Tempelhof-Schöneberg district . It is the first after the end of World War II built massive church in Berlin.
history
The Evangelical Methodist parish in Friedenau has existed since 1905. First, the Methodist religious community met , it consisted mainly of domestic servants in stately private households , for domestic services in apartments . After the Second World War, the members of the community came from all social strata . Since the congregation did not receive any money from the Protestant church or from the public administration , it was also dependent on donations from the United States in order to be able to build its own church building.
Building description
The community center consists of one building complex . The building with the worship room is in a closed construction with the neighboring house. On the other side, set back from the building line , is a three- story residential building . A large metal cross rises on the wall between the two structures. The worship room is connected to another building that protrudes into the depths of the property. The community hall is in it. The residential building covered with a flat roof contains the portal . A staircase leads to a small anteroom. Behind it is a large foyer with windows facing the courtyard, which also serves as a church café. The building with the worship room, which has a flat ceiling , has a gable roof . On the long side facing the street it has narrow, high windows. A two-part folding door on the other side leads into the community hall. Its structure is a reinforced concrete skeleton structure , the frames of the supporting structure under the gable roof are visible from the inside. It only has windows on the side that is opposite the building line to the neighboring property.
