Friederike Caroline Juliane of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksburg (born November 9, 1811 at Gottorf Castle ; † July 10, 1902 in Alexisbad ) married Duke Alexander Carl von Anhalt-Bernburg in 1834 and thus became Duchess of Anhalt-Bernburg .

Life

Friederike's parents were Friedrich Wilhelm von Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksburg (1785–1831) and Luise Karoline von Hessen-Kassel (1789–1867), daughter of Karl von Hessen-Kassel .

After Duke Alexander Karl fell ill with severe schizophrenia , she became co-regent until his death in 1863. After the Duke's death, the Duchy of Anhalt-Bernburg was merged with the Duchy of Anhalt-Dessau and Duchess Friederike lived at Schloss Ballenstedt until her death . She died on July 10, 1902 in Alexisbad.

She devoted herself strongly to social issues and the development of mining in the duchy. Her brother Christian (1818-1906) was named Christian IX in 1863 . King of Denmark.

Commemoration

One of the three former grammar schools in Bernburg (Saale) , the Friederiken grammar school , was named after her. In Bernburg there is the Herzogin-Friederiken-Stift retirement home named after her . The Friederiken elementary school in Ballenstedt bears her name and there is a memorial erected in 1996 in the castle grounds.
