Friedrich Karl Gottlob Hirsching
Friedrich Karl Gottlob Hirsching (born December 21, 1762 in Uffenheim , Principality of Ansbach ; † March 11, 1800 in Erlangen ) was a German polymath and author of reference works ( lexicographer ).
Life
As the son of the Ansbach Council and senior physician in Uffenheim and Creglingen, Wilhelm Simon Christian Hirsching, and his wife, b. Mayer, Friedrich Karl Gottlob Hirsching grew up in Uffenheim. After his father died when Friedrich Karl Gottlob was seven years old, he was taken in by his uncle and godfather, the Bayreuth Secret Council and Consistorial President Johann Gottlob Mayer. He received a good education at the Princely School in Neustadt an der Aisch and was also taught by private tutors. In 1782 he moved to the University of Erlangen , where he studied law as well as history, natural history (especially botany) and economics with Johann Georg Meusel and Heinrich Friedrich Delius . From 1786 he worked as a private tutor for the secret council of Buirette in Wilhelmsdorf and Erlangen.
On February 7, 1788, he passed his exams to become a master of philosophy, and on February 8 to obtain a university teaching permit. He usually only announced his lectures, but did not hold them, since, according to G. W. A. Fikenscher, he did not want to read for a few listeners, but could not hope for many listeners for the remote topics he had chosen.
In 1792, Hirsching was appointed associate professor of philosophy in Erlangen and in 1795 also delivered the required dissertation, from the defense of which he was exempted due to his poor health. On October 3, 1796 he was accepted into the Erfurt Academy of Useful Sciences. He died in March 1800 at the age of 37.

Hirsching was an immensely fruitful author and began publishing practical reference works as a student, initially on libraries and other collections as well as monasteries. His 17-volume historical literary handbook of famous and memorable people is a comprehensive biographical encyclopedia about people of the 18th century.
Samuel Baur judged Hirsching in 1803 as a “hard-working literary collector, but without outstanding talents, who moreover committed many sins against good taste and, through his insulting vehemence, got involved in many learned disputes” . In 1806 Fikenscher emphasized the "many" , in some areas such as botany or economics even "extensive knowledge" of Hirsching and praised his important collection of rare plants and other natural historical treasures, especially insects. He continues to write about him - somewhat more mildly than Baur - about him: “He was polite in dealings, and very agreeable and amicable in services, but also, in addition to some peculiarities that he possessed when he was irritated or imagined he was , extremely passionate.
