Heinrich Friedrich Delius (born July 8, 1720 in Wernigerode , † October 22, 1791 in Erlangen ) was a German medic .

Life

Heinrich Friedrich Delius was the son of pastor Jakob Delius and his wife Sophie Elisabeth Schütz. His brother was the future mayor of Wernigerode Jakob Heinrich Delius .

Delius studied medicine at the Universities of Halle and Berlin . In 1743 he successfully completed this course with a doctorate. In the same year Delius settled as a practicing doctor in Wernigerode. On May 20, 1746 Heinrich Friedrich Delius with the academic surname Democedes II was accepted as a member ( matriculation number 545 ) in the Leopoldina .

A year later he was appointed court medicus and assistant to the city physician in Bayreuth . Two years later, in 1749, he accepted a position at the University of Erlangen . There he taught a. a. Botany and various subjects. Against some resistance from the college, Delius introduced "chemistry" as a separate academic subject at the University of Erlangen.

In 1752 Delius married Barbara Margarethe Besserer in Erlangen. With her he had two daughters and three sons.

When Ferdinand Jakob Baier died in 1788 , the Leopoldina elected Delius as his successor as its new president. In the same year Delius was transferred to the nobility.

From 1778 he was a foreign member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences . In March 1791 he became an honorary member of the Russian Academy of Sciences in Saint Petersburg .

Heinrich Friedrich Delius died on October 22, 1791 in Erlangen at the age of 71.
