Friedrich Darmstädter

Friedrich Ludwig Wilhelm Darmstädter (born July 4, 1883 in Mannheim ; † January 23, 1957 in Heidelberg ) was a German district judge in Mannheim and a university professor .

Life

Darmstädter was a full-time district judge in Mannheim and aspired to a university career in Heidelberg. Since 1928 he held a teaching position for legal philosophy at the University of Heidelberg . In 1930 he completed his habilitation at the law faculty and worked as a private lecturer . On April 20, 1933, the law for the restoration of civil servants (BBG) gave Darmstadters a leave of absence. Since he had already been on civil service before August 1914 , according to Section 3 (2) of the BBG initially withdrew the leave of absence in July 1933, but reinstated it in August 1933. On December 31, 1935, his license to teach was withdrawn and he was dismissed from Baden's civil service. In 1936 he traveled to Rome , where he worked with Giorgio del Vecchio and translated his books. In 1939 there came to pay the Reich Flight Tax for emigration on Switzerland to the UK . For a long time he could not find employment in England . It was not until the end of the war that he got a research assignment at the University of Cambridge and in 1948 he took British citizenship . Since 1949 he taught as a lecturer German political theory and history at the University of London . After a few guest lectures, he was appointed honorary professor at Heidelberg University in July 1949 . In 1951 he finally returned to Heidelberg, where he was still lecturing at the age of 73 .

Darmstädter was buried in the Heidelberg mountain cemetery.
