Friedrich Hiller von Gaertringen (epigraphist)
Friedrich Freiherr Hiller von Gaertringen (born August 3, 1864 in Berlin , † October 25, 1947 in Thurnau , Upper Franconia) was a German epigraphist and archaeologist .
Life
The son of the Prussian officer Rudolf Hiller von Gaertringen (1837–1877) and his wife Helene Luise, née Kramsta (1842–1872), studied ancient history in Tübingen and Berlin (with Theodor Mommsen ). After receiving his doctorate in 1886, he went to Göttingen for further studies. He later married (1905) the eldest daughter of his teacher there Ulrich von Wilamowitz-Moellendorff and the granddaughter of Theodor Mommsen, Dorothea (1879–1972). In 1890 Hiller traveled to Greece and Asia Minor, where he took part in the excavations in Magnesia on the Meander . In 1892 he was appointed a corresponding member of the German Archaeological Institute . From 1893 he worked on Mommsen's mediation on the Inscriptiones Graecae , the corpus of Greek inscriptions , and from 1904 as an official of the Prussian Academy of Sciences . From 1917 to 1933 he was honorary professor for Greek epigraphy at the Berlin Friedrich Wilhelms University . In 1943 he lost his library and work materials in a bomb attack.
Hiller von Gaertringen was one of the most productive employees of the Inscriptiones Graecae. He published a total of nine (partial) volumes of this inscription work between 1895 and 1939, most of which have not yet been replaced. He also took care of the new edition of the collection Sylloge inscriptionum Graecarum started by Wilhelm Dittenberger and edited the inscriptions by Priene . From 1896 to 1902 Hiller carried out excavations in Alt-Thera at his own expense , largely supported by the geodesist Paul Wilski .
