Friedrich Günther von Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt (born November 6, 1793 in Rudolstadt ; † June 28, 1867 ibid) was from 1814 to 1867 Prince of Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt , Count von Hohnstein, Lord of Blankenburg, Leutenberg, etc. The prince belonged to the House of Schwarzburg .

Life

Friedrich Günther was the son of Prince Ludwig Friedrich II of Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt and his wife Karoline von Hessen-Homburg . The prince was sent to Geneva for a year for training in 1810/11 . This served, among other things, to learn the French language. In addition to Switzerland, the prince also traveled to Italy. Also at a young age he accompanied his uncle Philipp von Hessen-Homburg in the war against France in 1813/14 and was able to observe the events. Friedrich Günther first married Auguste von Anhalt-Dessau in 1816 . His wife died in 1854, and later two marriages that were not in keeping with their status followed. These connections caused great criticism in the principality.

Friedrich Günther became prince in 1814 and remained so for 53 years. This makes him the Schwarzburg regent with the longest reign. Before that, his mother Karoline ruled between 1807 and 1814. The prince was rather disinterested in government business and left the decisions to other people. His mother continued to influence the principality. The prince enacted a constitution on January 8, 1816. The rights of the state assembly were upgraded. Now the regent needed the approval of the state parliament to raise taxes and pass laws. The principality previously became a member of the German Confederation in 1815 . The country later joined the German Customs Union . The constitution of the North German Confederation came into force shortly after the death of Friedrich Günther. After internal political unrest, Friedrich Günther introduced freedom of the press on March 10, 1848 . He will remove this later. In addition, parties and associations were banned in 1854. Economically, the country was backward.

The prince died on June 28, 1867. His brother Albert followed as regent .
