Friedrich Julius von Neumann (born October 12, 1835 in Königsberg , † August 15, 1910 in Freiburg im Breisgau ) was a German economist. His nickname was Julius - he also signed official and private writings.

Life

As the son of the physicist Franz Ernst Neumann , he attended the old town high school in Königsberg with his brothers, the pathologist and founder of hematology in the 19th century, Ernst Neumann , and the mathematician Carl Gottfried Neumann .

Neumann studied political science and law in Königsberg and Leipzig, became a government assessor in 1864, completed his habilitation in 1865 at the University of Königsberg and was appointed professor of economics at the University of Basel in 1871 . In 1873 he moved to the Albert Ludwig University of Freiburg . From 1876 to 1909 he held the chair for political economy at the University of Tübingen .

Neumann dealt intensively with the formulation of the "Basic Concepts for Economics". He was also one of the first German financial theorists, along with Adolph Wagner . As can be seen from the titles of his publications, he was also preoccupied with socio-political issues. He was a member of the German party .

Julius Neumann married on April 20, 1868 with Florentine Susanne Tamnau (born October 23, 1846 in Koenigsberg, † December 18, 1927 in Tübingen), daughter of the Judicial Council Tamnau in Koenigsberg. The marriage remained childless. He died on a trip to Freiburg on August 15, 1910 and was also buried here.

Awards

In 1896 Julius von Neumann was awarded the Cross of Honor of the Order of the Württemberg Crown , which was associated with the personal title of nobility.
