Friedrich Mann (born June 26, 1825 in Schwabach , † March 15, 1906 in Würzburg ) was a German teacher .

life and work

Friedrich Mann grew up in simple circumstances and in 1844 took his state examination in mathematics and physics at the University of Munich . He then worked as an assistant to Georg Simon Ohm in Nuremberg . Three years later he was in Biebrich am Rhein and taught at the newly established secondary school. During the March Revolution he was politically active and gave a "freedom speech" in Biebrich.

Mann emigrated to Zurich in 1850 and earned his living with private lessons and writing. In 1851 he published the socialist novella Die Macht der Arbeit . In 1852 he was a secondary school teacher in Fischenthal . Mann's concern was to combine science and education. It was during this time that he wrote the "Scientific Pedagogical Letters". From autumn 1853 he taught as a professor of mathematics and physics at the newly founded canton school Frauenfeld in Thurgau . As principal he worked at the school from 1862 to 1868 and from 1870 to 1872. Mann wrote numerous papers and was later the secondary school inspector of Frauenfeld.

In 1854 he married Ida, née Sulzberger, and founded the Thurgau Natural Research Society in Holzhof near Leutmerken with like-minded people and became its first vice-president. From 1858 to 1872 he was President of the Society. In 1859, Mann became a citizen of Frauenfeld .

In 1872 Mann returned to Germany and took over the rectorate at the trade school in Kitzingen and in 1876 head of the district trade school in Würzburg. Mann became a councilor and in 1899 an honorary doctorate from the University of Würzburg . In 1890 Mann wrote a publication about Georg Simon Ohm , who was a great role model for him throughout his life.
