Friedrich Schulte

Friedrich Schulte (born April 27, 1867 in Delecke , Sauerland; † July 7, 1940 in Münstereifel ) was a German printer , publisher of the Münstereifeler Zeitung and photographer . He made the city of Münstereifel known nationwide through his postcard production.

Life

Friedrich Schulte was born in Delecke as the son of the teacher Heinrich, Franz Josef Schulte and his wife Maria Anna Schümer, attended elementary school, learned to be a printer within four years and then worked for eight years as an assistant in the printing trade. Friedrich Schulte married the teacher's daughter Anna Schepers from Mutscheid in Münstereifel on May 5, 1894 and had six children with her. Friedrich Schulte was a book printer and publisher by profession, but on the other hand he devoted himself a lot to photography, as his training as a book printer included a. also the acquisition of knowledge about the production of photographs and their reproduction . In addition to his work as a publisher, Friedrich Schulte has now built up a postcard publisher, using his photographic fundamentals to take photos himself and create his own motifs. Friedrich Schulte also attached particular importance to documenting his private surroundings and people involved in urban life in Münstereifel in detail with photographs. In his private life he tried very hard to take pictures of his family and their friends and acquaintances in their social environment. a. lots of photos of garden scenes, excursions, church festivals, carnival celebrations and special activities. Friedrich Schulte took photos with large portable plate cameras that could be fitted with interchangeable cassettes, none of which are left. Taking photos was quite complex at the time. Cameras and tripods were very heavy and bulky, and it always took a certain amount of time to set up the subjects correctly and to adjust the aperture and focus settings. The exposure times were very long, so that during uncontrolled movements of people, blurring occurred. All photographs by Friedrich Schulte are undated, so that the time of the photos can only be estimated on the basis of the depicted former city structures and the surroundings. As photo material, he mainly used orthochromatic glass drying plates in the formats 10 × 15 cm or 13 × 18 cm, but also the large format 18 × 24 cm for interior photos in churches. Over time, a wealth of photographs were taken and with his collection of over 400 negatives and positives he left the city a legacy in which the contemporary depiction of Münstereifel around the turn of the century is documented in unique images and interesting impressions of the city and the social milieu in Münstereifel at the turn of the century.

Postcard publishing

Multi-colored postcards were particularly popular with buyers. In order to meet such customer requirements, Friedrich Schulte therefore used the stone printing process (lithography), a flat printing process, at the beginning of his postcard production. H. all printing elements are on one level. The lithography was very complex, as a printing stone had to be made for each color. Colored cards were printed in up to six print runs one after the other, starting with the lightest color and ending with the darkest color. This also resulted in mixed tones. Drawings and color extracts were applied to the stones by hand with lithograph ink beforehand and later had to fit one hundred percent exactly when they were printed together. Photographs by Friedrich Schulte also served as templates for the drawings. Because of the artistic design, the high color fidelity and the printing precision, such postcards were very popular with tourists. Even today, such postcards are unsurpassed compared to modern printing processes because of their color quality.

The son of the publisher Friedrich Schulte, Carl Schulte, later took over the publishing house. He continued the work of his father, continued to devote himself to the photography of the town of Münstereifel and produced a large number of postcards, which were particularly popular with tourists in the 1950s and 1960s. These postcards were specially made using the offset process in the in-house print shop in larger editions on modern printing machines. a. also sold in its own shop on the corner of Werther Strasse / Markt. After Carl Schulte's death in 1987, the publishing house's printing works were closed. His wife, Mimi Schulte, also continued to run the business. Today the “Mütters” bookstore is located in this building. The range of historical postcards from Friedrich Schulte's publishing house is still quite extensive on the collector's market today. The cards are popular, are exchanged on exchanges, offered in second-hand bookshops and auctioned on the Internet. They are valuable historical documents because they tell of earlier times, document changes in the cityscape and thus serve directly for storage and memory.
