Friedrich Stahlin

Friedrich Stählin (born April 8, 1874 in Nördlingen , † June 22, 1936 in Erlangen ) was a German classical philologist and high school teacher.

Live and act

Stählin came from an old family of pastors and scholars. His grandfather was the pastor and teacher Martin Stählin (1781–1855), his father the pastor Leonhard Stählin (1835–1907), his mother Julie nee. Burger (1843-1888).

After graduation in Bayreuth (1893), Stählin studied Protestant theology , later classical philology in Erlangen , Berlin and Munich . During his studies in 1893 he became a member of the C. St. V. Uttenruthia Erlangen . In 1896 he passed the state examination for teachers at secondary schools from 1900 he was in Adolf Romans Dr. phil. PhD .

After graduating, Stählin taught at various high schools in Hersbruck, Munich, Augsburg and Nuremberg. In addition to the school service, he continued his scientific work. Grants from the Bavarian state made it possible for him to undertake extensive research trips to Greece, Asia Minor and Italy from 1903 to 1905. In addition to Greek and Latin literature, he was increasingly concerned with the topography of Greece. He also came into contact with numerous specialist colleagues. For the real encyclopedia of classical antiquity (RE) published by Wilhelm Kroll , he wrote numerous topographical articles from around 1909.

During his service in the First World War , Stählin fell into French captivity, from which he was released in 1920. He went to Erlangen as a teacher (senior teacher in 1922), and in 1923 to the old grammar school in Nuremberg, where he was promoted to director in 1927. He was widely recognized for his scientific work: in 1928 he was elected a full member of the German Archaeological Institute , in 1931 he received the silver medal "Bene Merenti" from the Bavarian Academy of Sciences .

The city of Volos in Thessaly granted Stählin honorary citizenship in 1934 . In the same year Stählin suffered a traffic accident from the consequences of which he could no longer recover. In 1935 he retired early. He died on June 22, 1936 at the age of 62.

Friedrich Stählin was married to Lina Gollwitzer (1880–1965) since 1909. The couple had two sons and three daughters, including Hedwig Stählin, who later married the clergyman Hermann Dietzfelbinger .
