Friedrich von Hövel

Friedrich Alexander Joseph Raphael Freiherr von Hövel (born April 16, 1766 at Gut Herbeck near Hagen ; † November 8, 1826 in Münster ) was a senior administrative officer and politician. He belonged to the political and intellectual leadership of Prussia .

biography

Living on his estate in Herbeck Lennetal Hoevel was inheriting commissioner on Junker Thal , Herbeck , Duden Roth , Port Dieck and Enkingmühl . From 1775 to 1782 he attended the Jesuit school in Fulda and in 1783 joined the prince-bishop's guard in Münster. After his retirement, he studied from 1785 to 1787 in Münster and from 1787 to 1789 in Goettingen jurisprudence . After that he took care of the administration of his estates and studied geology in Freiberg in 1795 .

From 1797 to 1805 he was district administrator of the Wetter district and from 1805 to 1808 the Prussian chamber president in Münster. Under French administration, he was appointed Prefect of the Department of Leine and Council of State in the Kingdom of Westphalia in 1808 and was elected to the imperial estates of the Kingdom of Westphalia . However, only 2 years later he withdrew to his estate. From 1813 to 1815 Hövel played a key role in building the Prussian Landsturm and the Landwehr troops. Together with Freiherr von Stein , Hövel is drafting a constitution. In 1826 he was a member of the first Provincial Landtag of Westphalia for the constituency of Mark . He died during the deliberations of the state parliament.

In addition to his political activities, Hövel was interested in scientific and technical innovations. At the Bergakademie in Freiberg Hövel had attended classes from Abraham Gottlob Werner . Until his death ( 1817 ) Hövel maintained an intensive correspondence with Werner. Hövel wrote essays on geology, soil science and mineralogy. The paper on mountain science in Westphalia, published in 1805, is one of the earliest methodological treatises on the geology of the region. With his work, he is one of the pioneers in the geosciences.

Hövel was also one of the authors of the magazine Westfälischer Anzeiger (Dortmund, 1798-1807) and was part of the editorial team of Hermann - A magazine from and for Westphalia (Hagen, 1814-1819). In 1808 he was elected a foreign member of the Göttingen Academy of Sciences .

Friedrich von Hövel was the son of Christoph Levin Johann Freiherr von Hövel (1732–1784) and Antonie Maria Franziska von Elverfeldt (1733–1801). Friedrich von Hövel married Wilhelmine von Ritz from the Etgendorf house on August 14, 1796 in Herbeck (January 14, 1776 to February 27, 1862), the daughter of a Palatine court councilor and canon at the Stoppenberger Stift, where his mother worked.
