position
Roger Behrens deals with the development of culture in civil society from the 18th century to the present. At the center of his analyzes is a critical theory of pop culture in the age of global capitalism .
Behrens interprets pop culture as the abolition of the culture industry described by Adorno and Horkheimer in the Dialectic of Enlightenment : Pop is the possibility of a democratic expression for an aestheticization of politics in the sense of Walter Benjamin's work of art in the age of its technical reproducibility . In this respect, Behrens analyzes pop as a concrete and practiced ideology of capitalist societies in the transition from Fordism to post-Fordism .
The culture industry (in the first half of the 20th century) turned culture into a commodity. With pop (second half of the 20th century) the commodity itself became a culture. In his analyzes, Behrens mainly refers to Herbert Marcuse , Guy Debord , and Peter Brückner . Additional sources for Behrens are the writings of Daniel J. Boorstins and Edward Bernays , a nephew of Sigmund Freud .
As a result of his analyzes, Behrens turns against increasing pop nationalism - especially in Germany - by participating in the I Can't Relax initiative in Germany.
