Friedrich of Lupine

Friedrich von Lupine , since 1829 Freiherr von Lupine (born November 11, 1771 in Memmingen , † November 28, 1845 in Illerfeld ) was a German administrative officer, mineralogist, geologist and writer.

Life

Friedrich von Lupine came from an old patrician family in Memmingen. He studied law in Strasbourg (from 1789) and Göttingen. When visiting the mines in the Harz Mountains, he became interested in geology and he also took technical and scientific subjects in Göttingen with Johann Beckmann and Johann Friedrich Blumenbach and in Erlangen with Johann Christian von Schreber and Eugen Johann Christoph Esper . This was followed by geological and mineralogical study trips to the Harz Mountains, the Ore Mountains, Franconia, the Rhön, the Fichtel Mountains, the Siebengebirge, the Bohemian Forest, Hungary, the Carpathians, Sweden and the Alps, which he also began to publish about in 1793. In 1794 he became a city judge in Memmingen, and after the outbreak of the Revolutionary Wars in 1796 he also took on other tasks in the army supply. He became office manager adjunct and office director in Memmingen in 1802 and was on diplomatic missions in Paris and on the Reichsdeputation in Regensburg in 1802. After Memmingen fell to Bavaria, he was ministerial commissioner in Bavarian service and was commissioned to create a mineralogical overview of Bavaria, including he put on a large collection and in 1809 published a first treatise. In 1809 he became chief commissioner, but was mainly a farmer on his estate Schloss Illerfeld . In 1821 he retired from civil service after the Central Office for Mining had been dissolved. He was also active as a writer on a wide variety of subjects (including a humorous writer and with an autobiography in the style of Jean Paul ) and collected art and antiques. In 1808 he became a corresponding member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences . On May 1, 1820, he was elected a member of the Leopoldina with the nickname "Agricola" . After Ludwig I of Bavaria had inspected his collection , he made it hereditary baron on October 24, 1829.

Lupine had married Marie von Hartlieb-Wallsporn (1776-1807) on February 15, 1796 in Memmingen. After her untimely death, he married Juliane von Wachter (1790–1857) in Memmingen on February 16, 1809. The following children emerged from the marriages:
