Friedrich von Willemoes-Suhm
Friedrich Christian Ferdinand von Willemoes-Suhm (born June 14, 1853 in Wandsbek near Hamburg , † September 7, 1920 in Munich ) was a German portrait painter .
Life
Friedrich von Willemoes-Suhm, scion of the noble family Willemoes- Suhm , was one of six children and fourth eldest son of the police chief and later Prussian district administrator Peter Friedrich von Willemoes-Suhm and his wife Mathilde Ida Albertine, born von Qualen (1824-1907). His brother was the natural scientist and biologist Rudolf von Willemoes-Suhm, who died early .
Friedrich von Willemoes-Suhm visited the Christianeum in Altona from 1863 . In 1875 he finished school at the Katharineum in Lübeck . After school he embarked on a Saxon military career, at the end of which he held the rank of lieutenant. Then he turned to painting. To this end, he studied in Düsseldorf, among other places . In 1886 and 1887 he was registered there as a “painter”. He later worked as a portrait painter in Berlin . In the 1890s, Hans von Bülow , Ernst Haeckel and Eduard Zeller had them portrayed by him. Even animal pieces were part of his repertoire. His wife became the opera singer and actress Helene Louise Schmidt (born March 26, 1861 in Vienna) on August 18, 1890, who studied philosophy as Helene von Willemoes-Suhm at Berlin University and earned a reputation as a playwright.
