Friendica (formerly Friendika , originally mistpark ) is free software for a distributed social network . The focus is on effective data protection settings and easy installation on your own servers. Other social networks and blogs can also be easily integrated. As of January 2014, Friendica's public user list had over 10,000 entries. The number includes only those who have decided to post their user profile there.

Functionalities

Friendica users can not only network with others via their own Friendica server, but also integrate contacts from Twitter , Diaspora , Pump.io and StatusNet or GNU Social into their “news stream” . Facebook was possible until June 2015. In addition to the bi-directional links can include contributions to Google+ , WordPress , Tumblr and libertree post. E-mail contacts and RSS feeds can also be integrated. Since the user accounts are distributed over many servers, their “addresses”, similar to e-mail addresses , consist of three parts, namely the user name, the “@” character and the name of the Friendica instance.

Many functionalities from the other popular microblogging or social networking platforms are also available in Friendica, for example addressing people or groups directly via "@mentions", direct messages, hashtags , photo albums, " likes ", "dislikes", comments and the redistribution of publicly visible contributions. In addition, contributions that have already been sent can still be edited in Friendica. The detailed settings for privacy and the public visibility of posts allow you to regulate for each post who can read which posts or information about the user. You can also create different profiles for this and show yourself differently to different groups. Downloading or deleting your own profile is just as possible as importing a profile onto another Friendica server. You can have different forums under different accounts, which you can switch back and forth between if you have registered the accounts under the same e-mail address.

There are a variety of extensions and various themes for Friendica . These include the so-called connectors that can be used to connect to the above-mentioned platforms. For the sake of simplicity, however, many new features are first created as extensions and later possibly incorporated into the core of Friendica.

development

There is no company behind Friendica. The developers work on a voluntary basis and the project is run informally, with the platform itself being used for communication between the developers. There are various forums within Friendica for this purpose, such as "Friendica Developers" and "Friendica Theme Developers". Friendica's source code is hosted on GitHub .

installation

The aim of the developers is to make the installation of the server software easy, even for technical laypeople. They argue that decentralization on small servers is a key condition for the freedom of users and for their data-related self-determination. The level of difficulty is similar to installing WordPress . However, installation on web hosts is sometimes not easy due to the lack of PHP5 modules. In addition, volunteers operate public servers so that newbies can avoid installing their own software entirely.

List of clients

Friendica uses the same API as the StatusNet / Gnu social project. A number of StatusNet clients can therefore also be used for Friendica. It should be noted that there are many small differences in the way the software works, so that not all features are available in the clients that are available in the web-based user interface . Basically functioning clients are (as of April 2018):

  • Hotot (Linux)
  • Choqok (Linux)
  • Pidgin (Windows, Linux)
  • Twidere (Android)
  • Mustard (Android)
  • AndStatus (Android)
  • Friendiqa (Android)
  • Friendly (Sailfish OS)
  • Gravity (Symbian)
  • Friendica Mobile (Windows 10, Windows 10 Mobile, Windows Phone 8.1: Windows Store)
  • DiCa (Android)

reception

The German computer magazine c't described Friendica in February 2012 as an easy-to-install system that was ahead of the alternative project Diaspora in several points. The t3n led Friendica in March 2012 as a Facebook rival. In the Infoshop News , Friendica was described as an alternative to Google+ and Facebook for the Occupy Nigeria movement . In DRadio Wissen , Friendica was named on January 23, 2012 in a broadcast about decentralized networks as an example of such a project. Interview partner Torsten Grote from the Free Software Foundation Europe (FSFE) then linked to the inclusion in his blog. In the Future Tense blog of the online magazine Slate , Friendica is mentioned in a post as a safer alternative to Facebook. In episode 490 in 2018, FLOSS Weekly magazine interviewed one of the main developers .
