Frits Soetekouw
Frits Soetekouw (born June 16, 1938 in Amsterdam , † May 3, 2019 in Purmerend ) was a Dutch football player and coach . As a professional, he made 276 games in the Eredivisie for five different clubs from 1961 to 1971 ; with Ajax Amsterdam he was twice Dutch champion. In 1962 he played once in the Dutch national team .
Club career
At the age of 18 the defender played at ADM in Amsterdam and two years later moved to De Volewijckers . For the newly promoted from Amsterdam, he made his first 33 games and three goals in the Eredivisie in the 1961/62 season. After relegation in 1963, he moved to Heracles Almelo , where he only stayed one season. In 1964 he joined the AFC Ajax, where he took the place in Werner Schaaphok's defense and was a regular for two seasons alongside Tonnie Pronk . With Ajax he was champion in 1966 and won the double in 1967 . In the 1966/67 season he made six games in the European Cup. After he had ensured the 1: 2 and thus the elimination of Amsterdam in the quarter-finals against Dukla Prague with an own goal in the 87th minute of the game, he was sorted out by coach Rinus Michels . For the season 1967/68 he went to PSV Eindhoven and moved a year later to DWS Amsterdam , he for until 1971 in the Eredivisie and in the season 1968/69 in the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup was active.
After his playing career, Soetekouw coached various amateur clubs, and in the mid-1980s he coached the professionals from AZ '67 . His main occupation was a driving school and a café, and later he became an insurance agent. In the last years of his life he suffered from Alzheimer's disease . He died at the age of 80 in a nursing home in Purmerend.
National team
On October 14, 1962 Soutekouw became the first and only national player for the Volewijckers . In the friendly against Belgium in Antwerp , he was one of four debutants, along with Piet Ouderland , Jan Villerius and Henk Bosveld , that Bondscoach Elek Schwartz sent onto the pitch. His team lost 0-2.
