Fritz-Georg Hugo Karl von Rappard (born August 15, 1892 in Sögeln , † January 29, 1946 in Velikije Luki , Soviet Union ) was a German lieutenant general in World War II .

Life

Rappard began his military career in the spring of 1911 as a flag junior in the Prussian army . He was promoted to lieutenant on October 23, 1912 with the Westphalian Jäger Battalion No. 7 . Rappard took part in the First World War and was awarded both classes of the Iron Cross and the Wound Badge in Black.

In 1924 he joined the Reichswehr . On August 1, 1937, he became a lieutenant colonel . The promotion to colonel took place on April 1, 1939.

At the beginning of the Second World War he was in command of the 277th Infantry Regiment. From February 3, 1942, he was in command of the 83rd Infantry Division , to which the 277th Infantry Regiment belonged, for a month . His division fought in 1942 in the Velikiye Luki area and the Battle of Velikiye Luki . On November 1, 1942 he was promoted to major general and he was commander of the 7th Infantry Division with interruptions until August 1944 . On August 1, 1943, he was promoted to lieutenant general. In this capacity, he was awarded the German Cross in Gold on June 1, 1944 , and Rappard awarded him the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross on October 20, 1944 and the Knight's Cross on February 24, 1945 (751st award).

After the end of the war in Velikiye Luki, Rappard was found guilty of a war criminal by a military tribunal of the Red Army with seven other members of the 277 Infantry Regiment, including his successor as regimental commander Eduard von Saß , and hanged in 1946. The allegations were war crimes and crimes against the population in Velikiye Luki.
