Fritz Baumgarten (art historian)
Fritz Baumgarten (born July 14, 1856 in Munich , † February 26, 1913 in Stuttgart ) was a German high school teacher, art historian and classical archaeologist .
Life
Fritz Baumgarten, the son of the historian Hermann Baumgarten (1825–1893) and Ida geb. Fallenstein (1837–1899), grew up in Karlsruhe and Strasbourg. He was a cousin of Max Weber and August Hausrath . From 1875 to 1881 he studied classical philology and archeology at the universities of Berlin , Strasbourg and Bonn . Even during his studies he dealt intensively with recent history and art history, to which he devoted his later career. In 1881 he was in Bonn at Franz Bücheler with a dissertation on the Byzantine epic Christodorus doctorate .
In the fall of 1881 Baumgarten became tutor to the German consul Karl Wilberg and accompanied him to Athens, where he spent a year and a half. At this time he got acquainted with the ancient monuments of Greece. The German Archaeological Institute elected him on April 21, 1883 as a corresponding member.
In 1883 Baumgarten returned to Baden and worked as a high school teacher in Freiburg and Mannheim . In 1885 he moved to Wertheim , where he married Else Georgii, the daughter of a lawyer. One of her sons was the philosopher and sociologist Eduard Baumgarten (1898–1982). In 1889 Baumgarten was transferred to Offenburg and in 1893 to the Berthold-Gymnasium in Freiburg im Breisgau .
In Freiburg Baumgarten had the prerequisites to supplement his school career with a scientific one. He did a lot of research on the city's architectural and art monuments, completed his habilitation in art history in 1903 and was appointed honorary professor for art history and archeology in 1911.
In 1912 Baumgarten switched to the Gymnasium in Donaueschingen as director , but continued to work as an honorary professor in Freiburg. He died on February 26, 1913 as a result of an operation in Stuttgart .
Baumgarten's research was reflected in numerous academic studies on the history of art in Freiburg and Baden and on archeology. His main research areas included the Freiburg Minster , the painters Hans Baldung and Matthias Grünewald . He deepened his knowledge of ancient art history on two longer research trips (1891 and 1906–1907, with half a travel grant from the German Archaeological Institute for high school teachers), about which he wrote detailed reports. He achieved greater fame with his contributions to the works The Hellenic Culture and The Hellenistic-Roman Culture , which he edited together with Franz Poland and Richard Wagner .
