The Fritz Behrens is a twin-engine former sea rescue cruiser of the German Society for Rescue of Shipwrecked People (DGzRS) of the 23.3 m class , which was sold in 1981 by the Schweers shipyard in Bardenfleth under shipyard no. 6442 was built. The DGzRS internal designation was KRS 13.

The first daughter boat of the cruiser, the Anna , had the internal name KRT 13. This was used in 1990 by the DGzRS as an independent rescue unit under the name Umma and replaced by a new building of the same name (thus also known as Anna  II); this new boat had the internal designation KRT 23.

Accident and modernization

On September 7, 1994 there was an accident in the port of Büsum ; the First Lady passenger ship collided with the stern area of the cruiser and pushed it under water. The damaged Fritz Behrens was then repaired in the shipyard. During this stay in the shipyard, the cruiser was extensively converted. This conversion was externally recognizable by the portholes that were now installed instead of the previously rectangular window areas, but above all by the new upper control stand, which was now completely closed. This corresponded to the specifications for the most modern German rescue cruiser developments. According to this, the control stands should be made gas-tight in order to be able to carry out operations in dangerous atmospheres, for example in the event of accidents involving tankers or dangerous goods transporters with poisonous loads. This so-called citadel operation was not installed on the Fritz Behrens . For situations in which the rescue men have to rely on acoustic perception from outside, an outside control stand with a minimum of maneuvering aids has been set up on the starboard rear of the upper closed control station. In addition, the stern of the cruiser was rebuilt during the extensive shipyard period. The stern is no longer round, but square. This so-called delta hull shape (the widest part of the ship is the stern) leads to better course stability in the high seas from aft. The first class to use this new hull shape is the 23.1 meter class .

The daughter boat Anna (II) was so damaged after the accident that a repair was not economically justifiable and was replaced by a new build of the same type and the same name Anna (III).

Naming

Fritz Behrens established the Fritz Behrens Foundation through his will , which made a donation for the DGzRS for the construction of a new rescue cruiser. The baptism took place on January 23, 1981 in Vegesack . The name of the daughter boat is the first name of Behrens' wife.

The cruiser is the second unit of the DGzRS that was baptized in the name of Fritz Behrens ; In 1977 a 9 m class sea rescue boat was put into service under the name Fritz Behrens . This boat was renamed on the day of the cruiser's christening in the name of a former mayor of Hanover , Arthur Menge .

Stationings

From June 1981 to September 1994 the Fritz Behrens was stationed in Büsum, then at the DGzRS station Greifswalder Oie in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania . From February 2009 she acted as a reserve cruiser, in summer 2009 she was retired.

Whereabouts

After the Fritz Behrens was replaced by the second 20-meter emergency cruiser Eugen at the beginning of February 2009 at the Greifswalder Oie station, it was used as a reserve cruiser for a few months. In August 2009 the former rescue cruiser was handed over to the new owner, WDK Hafen und Lager GmbH in Voerde ( North Rhine-Westphalia ). The new owner intended to use the ship in the Wesel-Datteln Canal as a work ship. Since April 2012 the Fritz Behrens has been operating under the British flag with its home port of Southampton. It is now being operated as a wind farm supplier in the Baltic Sea by Dorincourt Shipping Ltd. used.
